In detail
How it works
The low-noise Gecko Sigma uses a ±4g range accelerometer and can be fixed to a structure with a single central bolt. It continuously records data into a ring buffer, so that when an earthquake strikes the full event, including the lead-in, has already been captured. This sensitivity supports monitoring of a structure's natural frequency and modal response, which is critical for improving building safety.
Data & connectivity
Continuous data is stored to a local SD card and can optionally be telemetered to a remote computer via Ethernet or a cellular modem. Paired with the Power Stream (fitted with an internal battery), the Gecko Sigma is an affordable, fully compliant solution for the 2015 DPWH guidelines on earthquake recording instrumentation for buildings.
Field performance
The Gecko Sigma is also useful for rapid deployment of aftershock monitoring networks. Field testing at temporary deployment stations showed earthquakes as small as magnitude 1.0 are clearly visible at a range of 10 km from the instrument, and magnitude 0.2 events are discernible within 3 km, above typical background noise at a temporary surface station.
