Anti-fraud advisory

How ESS pays and gets paid, what our staff will never ask of you, and what to do if a message claiming to come from us looks wrong.

Scam emails in our name

In recent years a number of our new suppliers and customers have received scam emails claiming to come from ESS staff. The messages can look convincing. They usually press for an urgent payment, and they typically ask for money to be sent to a bank account we have never used.

Our procedure

How we set up payments

When we begin working with a new supplier, our finance team makes a small test payment first. We then confirm that it arrived by contacting the supplier’s finance department directly, and we verify that confirmation a second time by telephone or secure message. Only after both checks do we release payment in full.

Our rule

What we will never do

ESS staff will never ask you to pay into a bank account that differs from the details already established with you. If a message asks you to change our banking details, or to send a payment somewhere new, it is not from us, whatever the sender address or signature says.

What to watch for

  1. An urgent request for payment, or pressure to act before you can check.
  2. New or changed bank account details.
  3. A sender or reply-to address that differs, even slightly, from the essearth.com address you already deal with.

If something looks wrong

Do not act on the message. Call us on +61 3 8420 8999, using the number you already hold for us rather than one in the email, and report the message to [email protected].
