ESS Earth Sciences

The ESS group

Four divisions. One group. Engineers that understand your project.

Seismology, water, geotechnical engineering and meteorology are ordinarily four separate industries with four separate suppliers. At ESS they are four divisions of the same company, sharing one workshop, one calibration lab and one field team.

ESS Earth Sciences

The founding division and the group’s engineering centre. Loggers, sensors, telemetry and power systems for ground, water and structures — designed, configured and calibrated in the Richmond workshop, and supported by the same engineers in the field.

  • Data loggers, sensors, telemetry and power systems
  • Product design, manufacturing, calibration, and servicing
  • ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System certified since 2017

Geosystems

Structural, hydrological and seismic instrumentation for the civil, construction and mining industries — highways, dams, tunnels, airports, bridges, batter slopes, deep excavations and mines. Acquired by ESS in 2007, Geosystems is now one of the largest suppliers of geotechnical instrumentation in Australia.

  • Piezometers, inclinometers, extensometers and load cells
  • Rock stress, deformation and hydraulic fracture testing
  • Training services available for installation and operations

03Environmental & water monitoring

Greenspan

Every aspect of water measurement, meeting water authority standards for groundwater monitoring. ESS-manufactured sensors are unique and robust — we service a substantial share of the Australian hydrological industry.

  • Electrical conductivity, turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and much more
  • Water level bubblers with integrated pumps or for gas regulators
  • Robust single- and multi-parameter water quality field sensors

04Earthquake monitoring · since 1976

Seismology Research Centre

Approximately 100 seismographs and accelerographs across eastern Australia, locating hundreds of earthquakes within the network each year. Most instruments are operated for the owners of large dams, power stations and other major structures, with an earthquake alarm service, routine maintenance, data analysis and seismicity reporting.

  • Seismographs and software designed by and for seismologists
  • Earthquake alarm and emergency response services, data hosting
  • Earthquake hazard consulting, ground motion recurrence and synthetic accelerograms

05Meteorology & atmospheric monitoring

Weathertech

Supply, installation and support of automatic weather stations, atmospheric profiling instrumentation and solar radiation monitoring systems for meteorological services, research institutions, energy generators and industrial clients — from a single mast to a national network.

  • Automatic weather station supply, installation and support
  • Atmospheric profiling sensors and LIDAR
  • Solar radiation and fire weather monitoring systems

Shared across all five

Different disciplines. The same workshop, lab and field team.

Whichever division your instrument comes from, it is configured, calibrated, installed and serviced by the same group under one ISO 9001 quality system.

Manufacturing

700+ sqm in Richmond

Factory and system-configuration space for large project builds, minutes from suppliers, transport depots and the airport.

Calibration

Pressure, temperature, water quality

An on-site calibration laboratory serving every division, plus repair and loan instruments while yours is in.

Field services

One permanent crew

Installation and commissioning technicians, maintenance and software engineers, trainers and field seismologists.

Quality

ISO 9001:2015, certified by BSI

One audited quality system covering design, manufacture, calibration, installation and ongoing support.

Find the right team

Not sure which division you need?

Pick what you are measuring. We will point you at the right team — or the right instrument, whichever division it comes from.

Geosystems

Single and multi-level vibrating wire piezometers, installed and grouted by our own crews, logged alongside the rest of the array.

One supplier, four disciplines, over 50 years

Tell us what you need to measure and an ESS engineer will specify the instruments — from whichever division they come from.
