Gecko Blast Monitor
The Gecko Blast is an ESS-made compact triaxial velocity sensor and data logger for continuous vibration and blast monitoring, recording ground motion directly to an internal SD card.
- Output
- Peak amplitude to ~700 mm/s
- Frequency band
- Up to 1600 Hz
- Sensor
- 3x internal 4.5Hz geophones (triaxial: E-W, N-S, Up-Down)

Overview
In detail
How it works
Three internal 4.5Hz geophones measure East-West, North-South and Up-Down ground velocity, recording peak amplitudes of almost 700mm/s at frequencies up to 1600Hz. Data is written continuously to a removable SD card and can be reviewed and analysed on any PC; the standard LCD and keypad allow full configuration in the field without a laptop.
Deployment
The unit bolts directly to rock or concrete through a hole in its body, or its levelling feet can be swapped for spikes to push it into soil. It records continuously for days, weeks or months, drawing around 1W, so a car-battery-sized lead-acid battery gives roughly a month of backup power.
Connectivity
Alarm outputs can trigger an optional local beacon or transmit data in real time to a remote computer over Ethernet, WiFi or a cellular modem. An optional single-channel sensor input accepts a microphone for compliance-monitoring applications.
