Miniature Vibrating Wire Strain Gauge SM-2-Series
The SM-2 is a miniature vibrating wire strain gauge from Roctest that measures strain via the resonant frequency of a tensioned steel wire between two end blocks. It is offered as the spot-welded SM-2W for surface mounting or the SM-2A for installation in small confined spaces.

Overview
In detail
How it works
Exterior forces applied to the end blocks modify the tension in the internal steel wire and therefore its resonant frequency, which is read by a built-in electromagnet. A thermistor incorporated into the gauge supplies information on the effects of temperature on the materials.
Installation options
The SM-2W is designed to be spot-welded on flat or curved surfaces, with the electromagnet housed separately and either permanently welded in place or carried around with a reading unit. The SM-2A is instead held tight inside a small-diameter bore with a setscrew, with the electromagnet surrounding the connecting tube.
Tension adjustment
Unless otherwise specified, gauge tension is factory-adjusted at mid-range. It can later be modified via the spring fitting on the gauge according to the anticipated strain direction; the compressed spring compensates for wire tension and makes the SM-2 a highly compliant gauge.
