PENCEL Pressuremeter
The PENCEL (also known as the pushed-in or cone pressuremeter) is a small, highly portable pressuremeter system for running in-situ soil loading tests, comprising a probe, a control unit and connecting tubing.
- Working pressure
- 2500 kPa (max.)
- Pressure gauge range
- -100 to +2500 kPa
- Accuracy
- 1% F.S. (pressure gauge)

Overview
In detail
How it works
The mono-cellular probe — a cylindrical body with an inflatable sheath, fluid inlet, saturation ports, conical drive shoe and drive-rod adapter — is set directly into a borehole prepared by hand auger, driven pipe, static pushing or light dynamic driving, without heavy drilling equipment. The test is run in steps of equal volume increments from the control unit, producing a stress-strain curve.
Measurement
Two main parameters are derived from the curve: the limit pressure P(L), which corresponds to a twofold volume increase of the probe and reflects the soil's bearing capacity, and the modulus of deformation E, taken from the quasi-linear initial portion of the curve and used to estimate settlement.
What's included
The system comprises the probe, a control unit (pressure gauge, digital volume indicator, control valves and tubing connectors mounted on an aluminium tripod) and a single-conduit tubing line fitted with quick-connect shutoffs at both ends, allowing the probe or tubing to be uncoupled without desaturating the circuit.
