G-AM II Menard Pressuremeter
The G-AM II Menard pressuremeter is a borehole probe and control-unit system from Menard for measuring the in-situ stress-strain properties and bearing capacity of soils and very soft rock.
- Range
- 0-2.5, 0-6 and 0-10 MPa probe pressure gauges (ESS source text reads 0-25 MPa on the lowest gauge; not independently confirmed, see notes)
- Accuracy
- ±1% F.S. (pressure gauge)
- Max working pressure
- 10,000 kPa

Overview
In detail
How it works
The probe is a cylindrical body with an inner rubber membrane and outer protective sheath forming three independent cells; the central measuring cell is inflated with water while the guard cells are pressurised with gas, keeping deformation uniform along the probe. It is lowered into a pre-drilled borehole (or driven within a slotted casing) to test depth, and stress-controlled pressure increments are applied and held while volume change is read on a sight tube 30 and 60 seconds after each step.
Test results
Plotting injected volume against pressure gives an in-situ stress-strain curve. The limit pressure (PL) is the pressure at which failure occurs and relates directly to bearing capacity (Qa = (C/F) x PL); the modulus of deformation used for settlement calculations is derived from the same pressure-volume relationship.
Control unit
The control unit houses the regulators and valves that reduce and control pressure applied to the probe cells, plus a water reservoir supplying the measuring cell. Two pressure gauges are provided instead of a single delicate differential gauge, removing a common failure point. Coaxial tubing connects the probe to the control unit, with 25m, 33m or 50m lengths available.
