EFO Embeddable Fibre Optic Strain Sensor
The EFO is a 70 mm fibre optic strain sensor with a stainless steel body and two flanges, designed to be embedded directly in concrete. Its Fabry-Perot fibre optic design gives it intrinsic immunity to EMI, RFI and lightning damage, making it suited to long-term structural monitoring.

Overview
In detail
How it works
The EFO uses Fabry-Perot interferometry: a fibre optic strain gauge is bonded inside a small-diameter longitudinal hole in the centre of a stainless steel body. Two flanges at each end transfer concrete deformation into the sensor, and the design gives complete immunity to EMI, RFI and lightning-induced damage.
Installation
The EFO can be cast directly into wet concrete, or encapsulated in a concrete briquette that is then cast into the wet mix. It can also be set into hardened concrete by grouting the sensor, or its briquette, into a pre-drilled hole.
