DiTemp Harsh Reading Unit
The DiTemp Harsh Reading Unit is a distributed temperature sensing interrogator built for harsh field environments, measuring along fiber optic sensing cables up to 12 km with 1 m spatial resolution and a 10 second measurement time. Depending on configuration and redundancy, it has been assessed as SIL 1 or SIL 2 compatible.

How it works
The measuring principle is based on the Raman effect and the Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) method. Laser pulses are coupled into the fiber, where photons interact with the fiber material's molecules; some are scattered backwards, carrying information on the thermal motion of the molecules that scattered them. The spectrum of this backscattered light therefore carries temperature information along the length of the fiber.
Deployment
Featuring a built-in 4-channel multiplexer, the unit is designed as a stand-alone instrument for harsh environments, from desert to arctic conditions, with low energy consumption and an extended operating temperature range. Its high stability and self-referenced principle of operation support on-line or off-line long-term monitoring of large structures, with local temperature monitored at thousands of locations from a single optical fiber in one measurement.
Applications
Used for a wide range of distributed temperature sensing tasks, including temperature monitoring of concrete in massive structures, leakage detection of pipelines, seepage monitoring in dams and levees, waste disposal sites and smart buildings.
