ZDM100 Disdrometer
The ZDM100 Disdrometer is a laser-based instrument that measures the drop size, velocity and distribution of falling hydrometeors, used to monitor rainfall type, intensity, visibility and radar reflectivity.
- Range
- Particle size 0.125-26mm
- Output
- RS232, RS485, SDI-12, WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE
- Ingress
- IP65

Overview
In detail
How it works
The ZDM100 uses an infrared laser beam that passes through the sampling area; as hydrometeors cross the beam, changes in the signal are converted into particle size and velocity data. The instrument has no moving parts, extending service life compared to earlier mechanical disdrometers.
Measurement
It reports rainfall rate (0.1-22 m/s), precipitation intensity (0.001-1000 mm/h), precipitation type, visibility (10-5000m ±5%, 5000-20000m ±10%) and radar reflectivity (-9.9 to 99 dBz, ±15%), and can distinguish drizzle, rain, snow, hail and mixed precipitation.
Connectivity & power
The ZDM100 communicates over RS232, RS485 or SDI-12 (plus WiFi/Bluetooth/LTE options), runs from a 9-30VDC supply (typically 12VDC, under 3W normal, under 18W with heating), and is rated IP65 for outdoor use across -40°C to 85°C.
