Optical Microwave Scintillometer System
The Optical Microwave Scintillometer System is a self-contained, stand-alone instrument that takes rapid, direct measurements of sensible and latent heat fluxes and the turbulence structure parameter Cn2 over an area, without disturbing the surrounding environment.

- Built-in GPS
- Data processing
- Real-time, on-board computer

Overview
In detail
How it works
The system synchronously digitises microwave and optical raw signals and processes them in real time into heat-flux data products, averaged over a source region so the result is representative of a large area without needing time averaging. Because it is a remote-sensing technique and the mounting structure does not influence the measurement, it can also be used in sensitive natural habitats without disturbance.
Deployment
Once installed, the self-contained system needs very little maintenance beyond a power source. All data products are automatically stored and can be viewed continuously once a display is connected.
