Biral BTD-200 Lightning Warning System
The Biral BTD-200 detects the atmospheric electric-field disturbances that precede a lightning strike, giving advance warning out to a 35 km range before the first strike occurs. It's a portable, out-of-the-box warning system suited to events, mines, farms and other sites that need automatic SMS, email, siren or lighting alerts.

How it works
The BTD-200 makes quasi-electrostatic measurements of the local electric field, detecting charged precipitation and atmospheric field disturbances before the first lightning strike occurs. It detects cloud-to-ground, intra-cloud and cloud-to-cloud lightning to a range of 35 km, and complies with EN50536:2011+A1:2012 for a Class 1 detector and IEC62793 for a Class A detector.
Warning system
The sensor ships with bespoke Lightning Works software offering multi-user access, lightning-distance warning zones overlaid on a map, real-time warning state, sensor health display, system configuration, and automatic logging of lightning events. Alarms can trigger via relay to a siren, lighting system, SMS or email, or a combination. The system can run standalone via relays, connect to a computer via a supplied serial-to-USB converter, or integrate through a Base Control Box; an optional direction-finder software module adds individual flash location.
Electrical connections
A ground connection is essential for correct operation, with grounding rod kits available in 2 m, 5 m or 10 m lengths. The sensor is powered at 9-30 VDC, drawing under 6 W, via an included plug-top mains-to-DC supply; 0.33 mm² (22AWG) cable is recommended for runs under 100 m, and terminals accept cable up to 2.08 mm² (14AWG). Relay outputs are not intended for mains voltage switching and are rated 35 V DC, 16 V AC rms or 26.6 V AC peak, at 5 A maximum.
