How it works
The BTD-300 uses a passive, quasi-electrostatic measurement principle with no moving parts, giving superior lightning detection with a very low false alarm rate. An Ethernet or serial output lets it be integrated into a weather monitoring system, or connected directly to a standard PC using the supplied software.
Performance
Detection efficiency is 95% for a single lightning flash of any type, rising to 99% for a storm with 2 flashes and 99.9% for a storm with 3 flashes, for flashes within 56 km. Range is 83 km (51 statute miles), with range measurement uncertainty of ±5 km out to 20 km and ±10 km from 20 to 83 km, repeatability of ±300 m and ±1000 m over the same bands, and range resolution of 10 m. False alarm rate is under 2%, with a maximum flash rate of 120 flashes per minute and flash timing to the nearest 10 seconds from an internal clock.
Compliance
The BTD-300 is CE certified, complies with EMC standard EN61326, and meets EN50536:2011+A1:2012 for a Class 1 detector and IEC 62793 for a Class A detector, plus FAA performance criteria, making it suited to aerodrome installations.
Optional extras
A direction finder option adds 1° direction resolution. Heating options extend the operating temperature range to -40°C to 60°C, and a relay output is also available.
