LAS Mkii Scintillometer
The LAS MkII is a large-aperture scintillometer that measures atmospheric turbulence over paths from 100 m to 4.5 km to derive sensible heat flux. It runs on a simple solar-charged battery, processes data internally with a built-in GPS-timed logger, and displays results in real time.
- Range
- 100 m to 1 km (10 cm aperture); 250 m to 4.5 km (15 cm aperture)
- Output
- digital RS-232/422; analogue 0 to 2.4 V
- Supply
- 12 VDC, 6 W (54 W max with heaters on)

Overview
In detail
How it works
The LAS MkII provides continuous measurements of sensible heat flux over path lengths from 100 m up to 4.5 km, deriving Cn2 and other turbulence parameters from atmospheric scintillation. It can be combined with a meteorological sensor kit for wind speed, temperature and pressure, which plugs directly into the LAS MkII receiver.
Data & control
Data is processed internally, including Cn2 and sensible heat flux, using a built-in data logger with GPS time. The instrument is controlled and displayed via an integrated display and keypad or remotely through a digital interface, with EVATION software for instrument control and data analysis.
Power
The measurement process is straightforward and yields fast results, and requires only limited power, so a simple solar-charged battery is usually sufficient.
