Instrumented Rockbolts
Instrumented rockbolts are rockbolts and ground anchors fitted with strain gauges to verify reinforcement action by monitoring bolt integrity and strain distribution.
- Sensor configuration
- Multiple pairs of strain gauges positioned along the bolt length
- Compatibility
- Most types of rockbolt and ground anchor
- Variants
- Strain Gauged Rockbolt (current); Sentinel integrity-monitoring bolt (obsolete)

Overview
In detail
Strain gauged rockbolts
Wherever rock bolting is used for ground support, strain-gauged rockbolts measure the distribution of bolt loads for design purposes. Multiple pairs of strain gauges positioned along each bolt monitor load distribution along its length. Most types of rockbolt and ground anchor can be gauged.
Sentinel Bolt (obsolete)
Installed rockbolts can fail from high loads or corrosion, often with little visual evidence of a broken bolt. The Sentinel integrity-monitoring rockbolt was a rockbolting safety concept designed to give warning that a bolt had broken. This variant is now obsolete.
