Overview
In detail
How it works
The Casagrande tip comprises a perforated PVC body around an inner spun-nylon filter element with a 70 micron pore size, giving a permeability of 3 x 10⁻⁴ m/s (low air entry). It connects to lengths of 25NB PVC pipe and is installed in a borehole within a sand response zone, sealed above with bentonite and backfilled to surface.
Standpipe piezometers with Casagrande tips suit high-permeability soils where time-lag and high-volume displacement are not critical.
Reading
Water level in the PVC standpipe is read using a water level indicator (dipmeter) or Water Whistle, and used to calculate piezometric pressure or groundwater level. Standpipes subject to artesian groundwater can be fitted with a Bourdon-type pressure gauge instead.
