Materials
Enamelled iron staff gauges resist rust, corrosion and discolouration, and organic or marine growth washes off easily, so they last for years even in harsh environments. A marine-grade stainless-steel core with enamelled outer plating is also available; because the core doesn't corrode, these gauges suit coastal areas where the enamel outer may chip.
Mounting
Gauges are supplied in 1 m lengths with pre-drilled fastening holes. They are typically mounted on a redwood, cypress, cedar or synthetic board of suitable width, which is then attached or embedded in a wall. Mounting directly to concrete or metal structures is also possible, but mounting screws should not be over-tightened as this can chip or fracture the enamel.
Options
Bespoke gauge designs are available to order, using the same metal core and enamelled outer. Yellow staff gauges are supplied for visibility in snowy conditions, and single-digit number marker plates are available for marking each metre. Gauges can also be supplied to the Melbourne Water MW 7251-12-011 standard, featuring Top of Extended Detention Depth (TEDD) and Normal Water Level (NWL) markers in colour, with other colours available on request.
