Brazilian Test Curved Platens Indirect Tensile Brazil Test
The Brazilian Test curved platens accessory applies two opposing normal strip loads to a disc-shaped rock specimen to determine its indirect tensile strength, following the ISRM suggested method for the Brazil test. The curved loading jaws are designed to adapt to the ESS PLT10 point load tester and can also be used on third-party loading frames.
- Minimum specimen diameter
- 54 mm (NX core size)
- Thickness/diameter ratio
- 0.5 to 0.6
- Loading rate
- 10 to 50 kN/min

Overview
In detail
How it works
In the Brazilian test, a disc-shaped rock specimen is loaded by two opposing normal strip loads at the disc periphery. The load is increased continuously at a constant rate until the sample fails within a few minutes, inducing tensile stresses normal to the vertical diameter that are essentially constant around the centre. The indirect tensile strength is calculated from the failure load, specimen diameter and thickness measured at the centre.
Applications
Used for rock mechanics lab testing with a curved loading jaw suitable for lab testing frames. Platens are designed to adapt to the ESS PLT10 point load tester, with matching threads cut into the spherical seats, and can also be used on any third-party loading frame. The equipment is manufactured in accordance with the ISRM suggested method for determining indirect tensile strength by the Brazil test.
