3D Rock Stress Triaxial Digital HI Cell
The Digital Hollow Inclusion (HID) Cell is a low-power, high-precision sensor for permanent in-situ monitoring of 3D rock stress in a borehole, digitising strain at the gauges rather than over long cable runs.
- Output
- Digital serial output to a logger, computer, or tablet
- Measurement
- Triaxial (3D) strain and temperature, in-situ borehole rock stress
- Logger capacity
- Up to 4 HID Cells per multilogger (real-time CSV logging via USB)

Overview
In detail
How it works
The HID Cell is designed to be permanently fixed within a borehole, providing an immediate indication of strain and temperature. Unlike the original analogue HI Cell (developed by CSIRO), the HID Cell digitises the strain signal at the gauges rather than at the end of long cable runs, avoiding signal degradation and the need for special readouts.
The cell outputs a serial signal directly to a logger, computer or tablet.
Deployment
For long-term in-situ monitoring, a dedicated data logger can acquire real-time data from up to four HID Cells simultaneously, saving readings to a CSV file on a USB stick. Alternatively, for overcoring applications, a single HID Cell can be powered by a breakout box and connected to a tablet via USB to plot data in real time.
